Show Information
Lavinia Meijer
Concert Hall at the Jack H. Miller
Harpist Lavinia Meijer is reimagining the harp as a solo instrument and gaining accolades from across the globe. Born in South Korea, Meijer was raised and resides in the Netherlands. At 14, Meijer was already performing with symphony orchestras and earned a BA and MA from the conservatories of Utrecht.
Not only does Meijer search for rare classical solo and orchestral repertoire, but she is also always on the alert for contemporary music possibilities, collaborating with artists such as Iggy Pop, Phillip Glass, Laurie Anderson, and Hope College's own Sufjan Stevens. Besides performing the classical standard harp repertoire, Meijer experiments with electronic music, theatrical music, jazz, and avant-rock. Her many recordings feature music as varied as Handel, Bach, Scarlatti, Takemitsu, Dessner, Muhly, Piazzola, Glass, Ravel, and Debussy with two gold and one platinum album. Her performance at Hope College will include works by Debussy, Glass, and Meijer's own compositions.
